INTERVIEW / MARLO

Marlo is the co-founder of Paikka, florist extraordinaire, and one of our dear friends. We are joining Paikka and several other small shops, makers, and artists for an event this Saturday, May 2nd, from 4pm-8pm called Cygnet. To celebrate the upcoming collaborative atelier we interviewed Marlo to learn a little more about the inspiration behind this special event along with her current list of favorites...
Tell us a little about Paikka and the upcoming event (Cygnet).
I wanted to bring together the beautiful network of amazing designers, small business owners and artists we have here and create a shopping experience that felt really special and connective. Our big Holiday Bazaar in November is always so fun and energizing, so I wanted to create something that felt a little bit more intimate, refined and comfortable. I hope people come with their bffs, moms or aunts and enjoy drinking a glass of wine while shopping, lingering, and slowing down - where do we really get to do that (that isn’t shopping from our couch)!?
Cygnet was inspired by this luscious idea of finding the perfect vintage garment on some tiny street in Paris on a rainy night! Treasure hunting! Surprise and delight! Being a girl!

What are the people, places, or things you have been looking to for inspiration?
Things that have been inspiring me lately are: this one jacket I saw on Mary Kate or Ashley Olsen that the internet can’t ID for me, my friends, the return of green outside and all the tiny buds, and Charli!!

Current song or album you’ve been listening to?
I have had Rosalía on repeat since the fall - her voice is like french butter on bread. I am ashamedly tardy to Brat summer and can’t stop listening to Charli (sympathy is a knife), and a friend just introduced me to Grace Ives - I heard one song and agreed to go see her at 7th street last week and it was the breath of fresh air I needed!

What are 3 things you can’t live without?
9 hours of sleep, girlfriends, and flowers

Favorite place to visit?
One place?! Umm, let’s say Paris, NYC and anywhere I can touch the ocean.

What are you cooking/baking lately?
I have not been in the mood to cook at all lately - but I got an espresso machine this winter and that is what I look forward to every morning. I just made a fig leaf simple syrup so now I’m obsessed with iced fig leaf lattes!!

Where do you go in the Twin Cities to take a break or enjoy time off?
I love to hike at Lebanon Hills, that place has gotten me through some hard times in life (I practically lived there during the first covid spring), tennis courts with my friends, and all summer I try to swim as much as I can - so any lake or river :)

What are your top 3 favorite pieces in the shop right now?
The Rachel Comey Alma Dress!! I need it. The Somner Blazer - I don’t have anything in my closet like it, so I think I also need this. And the market tote! I love mine!!!

Do you have a life mantra or words you live by day to day?
Oooo, I have a lot of mantras that are super personal and sacred to me! One I really love is - “water seeks its own level” which helps me stay calm when things feel wacky. I know what’s meant for me will flow to me <3
